Meet Jon Zanone
COW Leaders : Jon ZanoneCreative COW Forum Host
I grew up in Louisville, KY as a photographer. Starting at the age of 8, I had a darkroom in the attic of my house.
I idolized the character Animal on the TV show 'Lou Grant'.
When it came time to get out of the house, I talked to an Air Force recruiter. He told me, "I can't get you into still photography, but I do have a job involving film!" I spent 12 years processing reconnaissance film from RF-4's, U-2's and 'other' platforms.
When everything went digital in the 90's, and the Air Force eliminated my job, I had a choice: I could become a dental technician, or retrain into television production. I spent 4 months at Lowry AFB in Denver, Colorado learning how to shoot, edit and light. Along the way, I found I really liked it.
I spent three years at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM, and then got an assignment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Seven years later I retired after 22 years in the Air Force and got hired by a contractor doing the same thing I had done the previous 7 years.
During my time at the Academy, I've had the opportunity to direct and edit several hour-long musical specials for the Academy Band. The specials were seen around the world on PBS and the Armed Forces Radio & Television Service (AFRTS). We're also responsible for the football coach's show, as well as the winter sports shows, also seen locally in Colorado Springs, Denver and on AFRTS.
Along with the 'cool' shows, we tape speakers, develop motivational and educational productions for the staff and cadets at the Academy.
Sometimes I sit back and look at the path my professional life took, and I'm totally amazed at how lucky and blessed I've been. It'll be interesting to see where the next 20 years take me!
