Ok, so I have to write something about Willie, HMMMM???
My first music recording was done in the early 60’s with a, TA DA! Webcore reel to reel. The seed was planted and that experience would ultimately chart a course that would make my checkbook cry out in pain and agony.
Making music became the priority, then it was life, career, wife, family and all of that middle class grown up stuff that sends Peter Pan flying home to Capt Hook and Tinker Bell.
It wasn’t till the mid 90’s that I really got serious with the exception of doing some multi tracking using two, 2 track reel-to-reel tape recorders in the late 60’s and early 70’s.
It was that stupid 4 track I purchased in 1995 that set in motion the chain of events that depending upon who you asked was either the beginning of a downhill slid or the start of a new adventure that would forever change Willie and said checking account.
It wasn’t long before I realized 4 tracks weren’t enough making George Martin look kind of like some sort of God that could walk on water. So like the commercial says “I bet you can’t eat just one!” I was off to the Hollywood Guitar Center.
ADAT, now in hand and me thinking I had arrived, only to discover a couple of months later that ADAT may not have been the answer either.
I could hear FEED ME in my head as the realization that 8 tracks weren’t enough of a fix, and the only solution that would quite the voice that was now relentless in it’s quest was the knowledge that the only sure cure was MORE TRACKS!!!!
About this time computers passed through the 500 MHz barrier and finally getting fast enough to really do efficient multi tracking. Then like a light coming from Heaven I found Cool Edit 1.0.
That was almost eight years ago, countless hours recording and editing and the building of several computers. I went through, Cool Edit 1.0,1.2, 1.2a, 2.0 (which by the way sucked), back to 1.2a, 2.1, Audition 1.0 and finally the current Audition 1.5.
Today I have a small, but state of the art digital recording studio and every time my checkbook thinks we have purchased our last piece of gear or instrument I surprise it with either a virtual trip to the candy store or an adventure to the $100.00 plus store, (The Tacoma Guitar Center).
Yes, you might say that I am hopelessly addicted to audio to which I might respond to by saying, “may God have mercy on my soul”.
