"Ron Shook is one of a handful of leaders that have done what he has done online," says Creative Cow director, Kathlyn Lindeboom. "He
is one of the finest leaders we've ever met in our nearly eight years
of building online communities. Back in 1999, his leadership turned the
then-dead Discreet Edit forum we had started at WWUG.com into one that
soon rivaled and later surpassed even Discreet's own online efforts. This
was, in large part, due to his enthusiasm and drive when he's talking
about something that he really believes in. Ron is one of the most
amazing guys we've met over the years and we have become great friends.
Both my husband Ron -- whom Ron Shook calls 'de Udder Ron' -- and I
consider him one of the greatest assets on the Cow Team. Intense,
committed, meticulous and professional are just a few of the words that
spring to mind when I think of Ron Shook. Oh, and funny! He's one of
the most twisted guys on the entire Cow Team -- and I mean that in a
good way! His 'two-headed Ron' photo (right) was his Cow
trademark for nearly two years and makes it clear what kind of mind is
at work in this creative guy. Another of his hilarious parodies was his take-off on teen angst when he created his spiked-haired punk identity 'Ronnie Rotten'
(left). Over the years, Ron Shook has built some of the strongest
communities we have seen and has done so with a degree of
self-deprecating humor that has endeared him to all of his friends here
at the Cow."
Ron Shook has been both a broadcast and corporate video editor in the Chicago area "...for more years than I want to remember," says Ron. "Unlike
many around the Cow whose interests came to video through the advent of
computer-based tools, I'm a traditional editor and that's why my focus
is always on the best systems that help me edit. I am less interested
in bells and whistles than I am in the kind of tools that are designed
from the ground up to assist editors. That is why I was such a huge fan
of Discreet Edit and have turned to IMC Incite after spending many
months exploring my options after Discreet discontinued Edit. Too
often, I see editors today that make decisions based on 'trinkets' and
things that really have little to do with managing and finishing their
projects -- which becomes even more important when dealing with
longer-form projects and multi-cam shoots. This is why I am such a fan
of Incite. It's clear that this is a system that is being crafted by a
team that is listening to editors."
In this article, Ron Shook attempts in a relatively non-techy way to put some perspective on a range of quality issues inherent in today's Non-Linear Editing technology. Perhaps as you shop for your next NLE or the services of an NLE/editor, you will have a better background for asking significant questions and separating the important stuff from the selling hype.
In Amsterdam, shortly after the tragedy of September 11th, broadcasters, manufacturers and professionals from around the world gathered for the International Broadcast Conference -- IBC. One of the obvious subjects on hand was the rapidly changing world and the state of this industry. One of the big changes that was announced at IBC was the acquisition of Fast by Pinnacle Systems. In this article, Creative Cows Ron Shook explores some of the issues, concerns and benefits of this latest strategic move.
