Dennis Kutchera is
an editor with many years of experience in both broadcast and general
production editing. Dennis' career in television dates back 23 years
with the past 14 exclusively in post production. He has worked as a
Senior Editor for YTV Canada in Toronto where he was known for his hard
hitting, multi-layered on-air promotions. He was also the editor for
the highly acclaimed PBS children's series "Shining Time Station". At
the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) he edited the award-winning
"Street Cents" and "This Hour Has 22 Minutes."
Dennis
was one of the first editors in Canada to edit online with the early
Mac-based nonlinear systems and today uses both Macs and WindowsNT
systems in his work. At a beta test site in 1993, he was the exclusive
editor on the first online Avid Media Composer in Canada. His company
owns an Avid Xpress Elite for NT, a Media 100xs and a traditional A/B
roll linear edit suite.

There are more modern ways of exchanging edit information such as OMF and AAF, but not everyone is going to have this. Media 100 now has OMF export as an extra option in version 8 and Final Cut Pro is supported through an OMF export plug in from Automatic Duck. But the old EDL text file is still with us. If you must use an EDL, you are going to be in for some frustration if you do not follow these procedures that Dennis Kutchera shares with us.
Dennis Kutchera explores one of his favorite sets of AVX plug-ins from a joint Canadian-Swiss company called 3Prong. The set includes ColorFiX, DirtFiX, FlickerFiX, TwitterFix, WaveScope and SpeedRamP. Dennis finds these plug-ins essential to online editing.
Dennis Kutchera explores Pixelan Software's SpiceMaster plug-in with special emphasis on what it brings to Avid users who can now add SpiceMaster AVX to their systems. Those using other systems will also benefit from Dennis's exploration as he looks at many of the functions and benefits of the SpiceMaster system. He points out some of his favourite features as well as some tips and work-arournds to get around limitations in the Avid plug-in architecture.
Dennis Kutchera looks at NAB 2001 and draws the conclusion that while there was no big single 'wow factor' for him, there was plenty at the show that could keep an award-winning editor occupied. The sizzle and the almost used car salemanship of the show may be waning, but in its place is a robust industry with many great choices and a lot of great hardware and software to chose from.
Dennis Kutchera looks at MediaMover by Random Video. This third-party utility written by an editor, Tony Black, addresses a need unique to using an Avid. MediaMover greatly expands the powers of Avid's respected Media Management tools -- already an Avid strongpoint -- made even stronger by this powerful utility. With longtime Avid expert Dennis Kutchera as your guide, Avid editors will greatly benefit from this look at an Avid 'must have.'
